What the result means
Your result is a target for working capacity under the assumptions you entered. It is a number to take to a supplier alongside your flow requirements and water analysis. It does not identify a nominal “grain size” you should buy.
The calculation, step by step
- Daily hardness load = softened water use in US gallons/day × hardness in grains per gallon (GPG).
- Capacity for your chosen interval = daily hardness load × days.
- Add a reserve, either as extra days of daily load or as a fixed number of grains.
Units matter: GPG describes the concentration of hardness, while grains describes the amount of hardness represented by the calculation.
A worked example
Using 180 gallons/day at 15 GPG gives 2,700 grains/day. Evaluating seven days with one additional day as a reserve gives:
180 × 15 × (7 + 1) = 21,600 grains
These inputs demonstrate the arithmetic. Seven days is not a universal recommended interval, and 180 gallons is not an assumed household average.
Before comparing equipment
- Ask for usable capacity at the stated salt dose, not just a marketing capacity number.
- Check peak flow separately. Stored treatment capacity and gallons per minute answer different questions.
- Confirm whether your controller already accounts for a reserve. Do not add or subtract the same reserve twice.
- For iron, manganese, or other treatment considerations, use your water analysis and the exact model’s instructions. This calculator does not apply a universal correction factor.
Find the right inputs
Use water consumption that passes through the softener, separating bypassed outdoor water. Get a current incoming hardness reading in GPG. Regional hardness maps are not household measurements, as explained in the USGS guide to water hardness.
